Sherborne is one the most beautiful towns in England, with an abundance of medieval buildings, a superb Abbey, some world-famous schools and picturesque almshouses – not to mention two historic castles!

Ideally located on the Dorset and Somerset border, Sherborne has excellent transport links, enabling the town to flourish in many different ways.

The Sherborne Hotel is the ideal spot from which to discover the delights of North Dorset, Somerset and the surrounding area. Standing in eight acres of grounds, this modern hotel has undergone major improvements and redecoration and our guest are delighted with the standards we have set.

West Dorset

West Dorset is almost entirely designated an area of outstanding natural beauty, covering over 400-square miles. The area includes Sherborne to the north, Dorchester to the east and Lyme Regis to the west, with glorious coast and countryside in between.

Here you will find woodlands strewn with bluebells and all kinds of flora throughout the year. Such a varied landscape means it is rich in wildlife too, providing a haven for rabbits, hares, foxes, deer, squirrels and much more.

On Golden Cap and Powerstock Common Nature Reserve, you will find an excellent variety of butterflies. It is a bird-watcher's paradise too with over 360 species of birds having been recorded in Dorset!

The miles upon miles of open countryside and green rolling hills hide more than 150 villages, all waiting to be discovered. Explore them by foot, on horseback, or by car. A leisurely cycle ride is one of the best ways to get around West Dorset’s quiet country lanes.

Sherborne Abbey

Sherborne Abbey is a fine example of an Abbey Church dating from Saxon times. The chief glory of the Abbey is its roof: the earliest great fan vault in existence. Visitors can also see the medieval misericords in the choir, some fine Tudor monuments, the Ascension reredos behind
the High Altar and the engraved glass reredos by Whistler in the Lady Chapel. The most recent feature is the Great West Window by John Hayward, dedicated in 1998 in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh.

Corfe Castle

This medieval castle, commanding a gap in the Purbeck Ridge, is now an imposing ruin and a popular tourist centre, drawing on its many years of history. There is a belief it may have been a Roman defensive site, but the ruins we see today were a rebuild in the 11th century of
what was a wood castle back in the 9th century.
